this show looked back at the year 1982 to reflect the peculiar collision of pop culture, science and politics in a year when the computer was named time magazine’s man of the year and the artificial heart, the compact disc, and michael jackson’s thriller were released to the public.
due to the inclusion of artists born before, in and just after 1982, a diverse yet consistent perspective is gained on a year perhaps not noted for its artistic significance as much as its media influence. via new approaches to marketing and textile, design and color — in conjunction with the pop-culture explosion and the political tone of the time — the early 1980s marked the change of a generation and the creation of a new one.
